My studio is just one of a myriad which will be open this weekend in New Haven's Erector Square. Every year for CWOS I get hundreds of people visiting me over the course of the weekend. This is the ONLY time I open up my space to the public, and means I will be spending the rest of the week cleaning and sprucing up my space in anticipation of your visit!
The picture above is of: Ultra-wide bandwidth time-hopping spread-spectrum impulse radio for wireless multiple-access communications, the digital print I have made and donated to WPKN's Artfest Fundraiser(see below for info. on that). It is a radio-based work I made specifically for thier event, being an avid listener myself.
Erector Square is located at 315 peck street in new haven, and a map is available here.
Hours:
All studios are open Saturday October 3, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
and Sunday Oct 4, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
my place information the CWOS web directory is found here.
Feel free to just drop by, or see below to map out the whole event and plan your weekend:
It's a big event so a bit of preparation is well worth-while.
How works:
Pick up a guide, which lists participating artists and locations. Get one at:
- Artspace, the hub and organizer for this event, located at 50 orange street in New Haven.
- Pick up a copy of The Advocate which is free and easily available all over town, there is a guide in the center insert.
- go online, view artists and locations at the CWOS site: http://www.cwos.org/index.asp
- There is also a kick-off party and Opening Reception at Artspace, Friday October 2, featuring the exhibits The Weekend Inventor (which I am in), and Dispersion, the CWOS juried exhibition. Artspace, is located at 50 Orange Street, New Haven, in the 9th square district. More info can be found here.
- WPKN Radio (a much-beloved independent radio station) is holding their fundraiser ARTFEST at this year’s CWOS, One of my prints is included in their benefit art sale! This too is happening at Erector Square.

Here is what Artspace says of the whole event:
"Over the past eleven years, City-Wide Open Studios (CWOS) has drawn thousands of visitors to explore New Haven's neighborhoods while discovering artists, galleries, and the treasures of our city.
City-Wide Open Studios celebrates contemporary art in all its myriad forms, and is undoubtedly Connecticut's leading visual arts event. Art dealers and curators from the region and beyond have used CWOS as a resource to discover new artists, plan upcoming shows, and buy art. As one of the largest Open Studios programs in the country, CWOS connects hundreds of local artists with the Greater New Haven community.
The 2009 CWOS program provides opportunities throughout the year for artists and visitors to connect via open studios, exhibitions, programs and events, and our new dynamic website."
It's really true, too. New Haven boasts an astonishing number of artists for a city this size, and has easy-to-access venues like Erector Square , which means you go, you park and can wander around all day looking at work, chatting with artists and friends, and it's all FREE!
This is a great activity to do with kids, it creates a sense of community among often-isolated artists, and it is organized with great efficiency and panache by Artspace.
I hope to see you all this weekend!
